Call for proposals for the 2018 SES Conference: Deadline November 30, 2017

SES-The Society for Standards Professionals will hold its annual conference in Nashville, Tennessee on August 7-8, 2018. The theme of the 2018 conference is “Dynamic Diversity: Expanding the Future of Standardization” and will bring together standards professionals from around the world to share experiences and best practices in standards development and conformity assessment. Attendees include standards administrators, technical experts who participate in standards development as subject matter experts, standards users, conformity assessment professionals, and standards development and publication support organizations, and others who are engaged in standards and conformity assessment.

For 2018, SES is piloting a new approach for developing some of the SES conference sessions and invites experienced speakers to submit proposals for presentations of topics relevant to standardization and standards professionals. Some topics for consideration include (but are not limited to):

·       Case Study: Value of Standards

·       Case Studies: Engaging Stakeholders

·       Innovation and Standardization

·       Training/Competencies of standards and conformity assessment professionals

Submission guidelines

Presenters are invited to submit proposals for original presentations that have not previously been presented at an SES Conference. Presentations may fit into either of two categories: a 20-minute “traditional” presentation guided by a slide deck, or a 20-minute TED-style “talk” (no slides).

Submission

Length of presentation

Organization in conference program

Traditional presentation (20-minute presentation with slides, plus Q&A)

· Presenter name

· Presentation title

· 250 word abstract

· Two or three learning objectives that the presentation will deliver

· Summary of prior presentation experience

20 minutes with additional time for questions

Total of 90 minutes for three speakers and a moderated Q&A session

TED-style “talk” (20-minutes without slides, plus Q&A)*

· Presenter name

· Presentation title

· 250 word abstract

· Two or three learning objectives that the presentation will deliver

· Summary of prior presentation experience

20 minutes with additional time for questions

Total of 30 minutes for a single speaker and a Q&A session

All abstracts should be well-written and provide a clear indication of the subject matter to be presented and how SES conference attendees will be engaged. Learning objectives should be concise statements about what conference attendees should expect to learn as a result of the presentation.

*Please note that there are limited TED-style “talks” available during the conference session. Individuals who submit a proposal for a TED-style “talk” might also be considered for a different session format.

Review process

All submissions will be reviewed by a sub team of the SES Conference Program Committee with representation from the SES Board of Directors. Selection criteria will include relevance to the SES audience and fit with the overall conference program. Final decisions on acceptance will be made by the chair of the SES Conference Program Committee, with review by the SES Board of Directors.

The deadline for all submissions is November 30, 2017. Proposals should be submitted to the SES Conference Program Committee Chair, Kerri Haresign, at kharesign@cta.tech. Proposers will be notified whether their submissions have been accepted by January 26, 2018.

Terms of agreement

If their proposal is selected for the 2018 SES Conference, presenters will:

  • Confirm their availability to speak during a specified date and time during the conference in the proposed format.
  • Work closely with the SES Conference Program Committee and/or SES Executive Director to meet all deadlines leading up to the conference.
  • Develop a high-quality presentation in the selected format.
  • Avoid promoting a particular service or product via the presentation.
  • Give SES permission to promote the presentation as part of conference marketing, record the presentation, and make any slides developed for the presentation available on the SES website after the conference.

In return, presenters will receive complimentary conference registration for the day of their presentation, plus breakfast and lunch on that day. Please note that SES does not provide travel funding assistance.

The September/October issue always highlights the SES annual conference - celebrate this year’s award winners and honor the incoming Board of Directors and the SES committees, plus the full text of the president’s State of the Society address. This year we were co-located with the IFAN Members Assembly, the ICES conference, and the World Standards Cooperation Academic Day, and provide a report on those activities as well. In the news, note the academic challenge sponsored by SES member CSA Group in Canada, and note that US participants are allowed.

SES to Review SES2 2011 Model Procedure for the Development of Standards.

SES SC has started the review of its SES2 2011 Model Procedure for the Development of Standards. Some of the areas identified for review are:

  • Consensus requirements – the three current “Options” would become examples;  other popular ones could be added.  The committee is considering what to do with abstentions?
  • Opportunity to vote – letter ballots, vote during meetings, etc.
  • Disposition of comments –treatment for those submitted with affirmative or negative votes, options to address them and get consensus on resolutions, level of consensus needed function of the stage of the approval process.

To submit comments or suggestions around these areas email and_moldoveanu@nema.org.
