Past award recipients

Recipient: Joseph Bocchiaro, Principal Consultant, The Sextant Group

Joseph Bocchiaro has worked in the technology side of building design and systems integration for over 30 years, primarily with audiovisual/IT systems. As a Principal Consultant for The Sextant Group, a nationwide building technology consulting firm, he is privileged to work with clients such as architects and owners towards sophisticated building technology implementations. Joe has also worked as the VP of Standards and Industry Innovations for InfoComm International, the audiovisual trade association. His role there included forward‐looking projects in AV/IT systems, energy efficiency, sustainable events, and intelligent buildings, leading to joint ANSI Standards at InfoComm, TIA, CEA, CEDIA, IES, and ISA. As a Certified Standards Professional, Joe is aware of and is involved with the interconnected nature of building technologists, architects, engineers, and the construction industry, and how specifications and codes are developed. He is particularly interested in the commissioning and systems verification aspects of construction projects, and is integral in improving these processes at The Sextant Group. Joe holds a B.S. in Electro‐Optical Engineering, a B.A. in Film Studies, an M.A. in Media Studies, and a Ph.D. in Educational Technology, and is an active global presenter and author. His enthusiasm for sustainability parallels his lifelong involvement with Boy Scouts of America.

During his tenure at InfoComm International, Joe was tasked with starting a Standards Department for the audiovisual industry, which included joint standards projects. His networking led him to SES, where he found the necessary documents, certifications, and education to build a program around. By adopting ANSI/SES‐1 and SES‐2 as the basis for their ANSI Accredited Standards Developer documentation, InfoComm was able to quickly become an ASD. Joe’s in‐depth study of and gratitude for these documents led to an interest in updating and revising them, and he became the Chair of the Standards Committee. This work later led to his appointment to the SES Board as the Director of the Technical Council. Through eight years of volunteerism, Joe was able to maintain SES as an ANSI ASD, updating all of the TORs and SES Standards Development Procedures. He led the Committees to revise both ANSI/SES‐1 and SES‐2, and to launch the SES‐3 initiative on Joint Standards. During this time, Joe participated in all of the SES conferences, and was pleased to introduce his InfoComm staff to SES and to have them become certified. Joe also enjoyed participating in the World Standards Day Paper Competition through this time, and won it four times. Other SES projects included Conference Planning Committee Membership, World Standards Day Paper Competition judging, presenting at the SES Annual Conference twice and presenting two SES Webinars.
