The Society for Standards Professionals has established a Scholarship Program to support students involved in and use standards in their academic curriculum. We know that each new generation of graduating students holds the potential for helping us achieve our mission of increasing awareness and use of standards.
Individual or Organization members may support the SES Scholarship Program. Underwriters Laboratories (www.ul.com) is the first organization to co-sponsor the newly established program.

Mark your calendars for the 66th Annual SES Conference, August 7 - 10, 2017. The 2017 conference will take place in Chicago, Illinois at the Drake Hotel, a historic Chicago landmark located at the start of the Magnificent Mile and featuring breathtaking views of Lake Michigan. This year's Keynote speaker will be Jim Shannon, IEC President.
This year’s sessions are:

• Case Study: Standards Success through Alliances
• Balancing of Innovation and Standardization

We will be joining two international groups on one day of the conference – International Cooperation for Education about Standardization (ICES) and International Federation of Standards Users (IFAN). More details to follow in the months to come.
Seeking SES Liaison to IFAN
The International Federation of Standards Users (IFAN) is an independent, not-for-profit international association of national organizations for the application of standards, and companies, professional and trade associations, academia, conformity assessment bodies, consultancies and governmental agencies, that are concerned with the use of standards.
The liaison position is open to any SES member in good standing. The liaison must be able to commit to a full 2-year term and have adequate funding to attend IFAN meetings as requested. No financial support is available from SES or IFAN. If interested please contact the SES Executive Director, Mike Morrell, firstname.lastname@example.org for a full position description.
SES – The Society for Standards Professionals (SES) is pleased to announce a new partnership with the Standards Council of Canada (SCC).
SES and SCC are both committed to the development and promotion of standards and conformity assessment professionals. As a result, SES and SCC recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding intended to join forces to assist the standards community. The MOU was signed during the annual SES conference held in Denver, Colorado in August 2016. Under the agreement, SES and SCC will cooperate and promote standards educational offerings, share relevant news of interest to members, promote North American standards and conformity assessment harmonization, collaborate on joint webinars to the benefit of members, and collaborate on new initiatives and programs targeting students and young professionals. SES to Review SES2 2011 Model Procedure for the Development of Standards.
SES SC has started the review of its SES2 2011 Model Procedure for the Development of Standards. Some of the areas identified for review are:
- Consensus requirements – the three current “Options” would become examples; other popular ones could be added. The committee is considering what to do with abstentions?
- Opportunity to vote – letter ballots, vote during meetings, etc.
- Disposition of comments –treatment for those submitted with affirmative or negative votes, options to address them and get consensus on resolutions, level of consensus needed function of the stage of the approval process.

SES-3 - The Essential Framework for Joint Standards Development
Recent trends in standards development indicate an increase in efforts where two or more organizations enter into an agreement for the development and publication of a Joint Standard. SES-3 was published in 2016 to provide guidance to interested parties by outlining the key components of a Joint Standards Agreement and a recommended process for managing the development of Joint Standards. This webinar presents an overview of the SES-3 standard.

SES - The Society for Standards Professionals is pleased to announce the release of its first Mobile App developed to digitally distribute the Society’s content directly to your device as soon as it is available. The Mobile App will be available for Android, Apple, and Windows devices via their respective application stores. The free-of-charge Mobile App will host complimentary content including a summary of SES activities, the SES Annual Conference Program, and the SES monthly member e-newsletter. The International Code Council is pleased to be collaborating with SES - The Society for Standards Professionals in the distribution of two key resources design to assist Standard Developers and others who utilize or are involved in the standards development process. These two publications,ANSI/SES-1:2013, Recommended Practice for Designation and Organization of Standards and SES-2:2012, Model Procedure for the Development of Standards provide guidance for those interested in the effective creation and implementation of standards.
